...on the 2005 Winter Chase
The Winter Chase began early on a wet and chilly Sunday morning near the Bell Tower in Perth. The first twist of The Chase saw the return of a team who had completed the course before. As the Winter Chase was a similar course to the original Postcard Chase, The Experts (Green) arrived at the start to offer all other teams a run for their money. The five teams (pictured above) 'raced' to their first Clue (Yellow) waiting for them at the gates to the Conservatory (near the Esplanade). From there all teams travelled to a boat permanently moored in East Perth on Henry Lawson Walk.
Fantastic Four (Blue) and Team WRX (Orange) turned up to Claisebrook almost simultaneously (Kelly, Richard and Adrian pictured above), followed shortly behind by the other teams. At this moment in time, however, the Buddies (Purple) were almost completely lost as they headed for an assumed location in Rivervale. After working out their mistake, the Buddies were able to find the boat and attempt to catch up to the other teams. The team's next postcard asked them to find Vincent; the wet, shattered man.
In Hyde Park, on top of a tiled water fountain, teams needed to inflate a variety of pool objects to receive their next Clue. Although the first team to arrive to Vincent Street was the Fantastic Four, the Orange team arrived in second place yet left first. Green team and Team Brunei (Red) (Ari and Brett pictured above) turned up at the same time, with the Buddies still trailing. Teams then travel to the Fire Grove, near the DNA Tower to begin the first Split (Blue) of The Chase. In King's Park, the each team needed to complete two separate tasks. The driver of each team was asked travel to the Western Power Parklands by car. To complete the Split, a least one passenger from each group needed to walk to the Energy Ball (pictured below) on foot.
The 'expected' completion of the 1.3 kilometre 'walk' confused a number of groups. Two of the first four teams completed the Split correctly, however, the Blue team and Red teams both drove to the Energy Ball, thus forcing both teams to return to the DNA Tower and complete the task correctly. This mistake allowed Purple team to catch up within two minutes of both teams. As the Rain came down (pictured below), teams travelled to Lake Monger. On this next Clue, the Orange team took the lead with The Experts close behind. Then both Team Brunei (Kerry pictured below) and the Buddies arrived simultaneously, with the Blue team taking up the rear. The
next Clue sent all teams to Bold Park to locate an 'X' on a
map with no street names or titled landmarks. In this City Beach park, at the
corner of Possum Walk and Camel Lake trail, teams found a locked briefcase.
Using their unique clues to the briefcases combination, all teams,
except one, were able to unlock the briefcase and obtain their
next Clue. Unfortunately, after catching up to the pack, the Buddies
got lost once again. They were also the last team the next postcard which
sent all teams to Claremont Showgrounds. Here at Gate One (pictured below), all teams received a new Split
postcard that created much confusion. The driver of each team needed to travel to Casablanca Restaurant on
As the Split (Blue) continued, all leading teams travelled on foot to the Showground Train Station. Only realizing it was closed when they arrived, they split into two groups. The two teams (The Experts (Green) and Team Brunei (Red)) travelled to Loch Street station and caught the express train past the other two teams waiting at Claremont station. The Buddies (Purple) caught up to the pack, but now both the Red and Green teams now had a fifteen minute lead on all the other teams. At Casablanca Restaurant, teams had to search through recycling bins to locate their next postcards. Ari from the Team Brunei found their clue first closely followed by Brett in second place. Although Team WRX (Orange) made to the restaurant with The Experts and Team Brunei, their driver Richard had to wait for Matt and Adrian to arrive on the train with the other teams. At the bins (pictured below), Tony from Fantastic Four (Blue) was the first to find his postcard, followed by Richard and then Ian. Now with a firm lead, both Red and Green teams raced to a Bonus (Rose).
In 'Time
or Climb', teams travel
to Mt Lyell and choose to either count the number of steps (in a straight line) from the
base of the stairs to the pagoda (pictured below)
or
read the time on the sundial.
Knowing exactly where to go, Alize and Brett reached Sorrell Park first. At this next location in North Fremantle, teams had to locate a bench that over looks the Swan River. From here, the next Clue sent teams to lunch across the river near the Beach Street Cafe, the location of the lunch spot between legs. The Green team made no mistakes in making it in first to lunch, across the road from the Ferry Terminal, however a minor confusion sent the Red team travelling back to the City of Perth. Understanding their mistake fairly quickly saw them eventually make to the lunch spot in fourth place. So what happened to the other three? Fantastic Four lead the pack being the first into the North Bank park, then across to the Ferry Terminal in Second place. Team WRX also did well, making into the lunch spot in the middle of all the groups. Although the Team Brunei had made a mistake that sent them to fourth, their quick repair saw the Purple team made it in last place, but all of this was about to change!
After lunch, all teams started at the same time, quickly eliminating any leads. The first clue of the second half was a verbal Spilt (Blue) where the team drivers were asked to travel to the base of Stirling Bridge. At least one passenger needed to walk to the next postcard (pictured above), which was waiting for them at the corner of Stirling and Canning Highway. After walking down the stairs, to their waiting drivers, teams then travelled to Willagee to work their way through the confusing, giant maze. Here, at the corner of Hodge and Steel Street, teams had to work their way trough a coloured maze, to the centred red box. Team WRX (Orange) arrived first at the maze, yet was the second to leave; it was the power of many that saw first place through the maze go to Fantastic Four (Blue). Although arriving in fourth place, almost all four team members negotiated themselves through the maze to be the first team to leave. The Buddies (Purple) turned up second and left last, The Experts (Green) team arrived last and left fourth and Team Brunei (Red) was the only group to arrive and leave in the same position in the pack; namely third.
Now teams travelled north to a Bonus (Rose) at Point Walter Reserve, specifically Armstrong Spit. At this Bonus, the first team to run onto the spit would receive additional points for their team. The Blue team, in this case, maintained their lead from Willagee to allow Tony to be the first on the spit to receive the next Clue. The Orange team made it in second, and the Buddies scampered from last place to make it in third. The remaining teams made it to the location almost simultaneously. Next, teams were sent to Dinosaur Park (pictured above), in Palmyra. Located at the corner of Aurelian and Carrington Street. Here, teams maintained the same positions to that at Point Walter, however Team WRX was sufficiently catching up.
In Booyeembara Park, at the corner of Montreal and Stevens, teams need to look for a large white snake (pictured above) that represents he divisions of the calendar year. In this Aboriginal park, the Orange team took the lead, closely followed by the Blue and Purple teams. With the other teams trailing, and a mix up with clues, the next task stopped teams in their tracks. As part of their next postcard, teams also received one piece of a wooden puzzle. In this case teams had to travel to the next location, instantly recognized by Matt, and construct the puzzle. At Sir Frederick Samson Memorial Reserve in Samson, teams need to meet at the Xanthorrhoea preissii (Grass Tree), and wait for other teams. After all teams arrived, and they successfully constructing the puzzle, groups raced to the next Split (Blue), except one! One team may have created Chase history by being the first team to 'accidentally' skip a location.
The Buddies (Purple), on route to the next clue, made a wrong turn and made it to the end point of the next Split (Blue). After being told their mistake, Ian and Gordon were then the first team to the 'correct' location. At Hilton Reserve, on the corner of Carrington Street and Lefroy Road, teams had to find the Peace Grove plaque (pictured above) hidden somewhere in this park. At this point a Split instructed the team driver to walk to the corner of Farrell and Paget Street, and locate a disused mailbox. Hidden inside one of the empty mail slots was the team's next clue. The Purple team maintained their lead at this point, followed closely by Team WRX (Orange) and Fantastic Four (Blue), with the other only slightly trailing. Now, with only two suburbs to go, and three postcards to find, teams faced their hardest clues. Groups were sent to the suburb of Murdoch, to locate the Broadwalk. Specifically, the Clue (Yellow) was asking teams to enter Murdoch University campus to locate the Robertson Lecture Theatre; a building that most students on campus wouldn't know even exists. At this point, the Blue team took back the lead, however both Team Brunei (Red) and Buddies (Ian pictured above) followed closely behind. The Experts (Green) took fourth position, only slightly following Team WRX. After receiving this Clue, most teams tried to leave the University Carpark and headed for South Street, only to discover that the penultimate clue was also to be found on the Murdoch Campus. Teams were asked to find the Chinese Gardens, located at the other end of the Broadwalk. Although the Red team knew exactly where to go (seeing that they parked right next to Chinese Gardens, and walked from there to the Robertson clue), the Blue claimed the postcard first. The Buddies team, once again, achieved a third placing, with the other teams tussling for last.
The final suburb for the Winter Chase lead teams into Winthrop. At the Piney Lakes 'Sensory Park', the Fantastic Four maintained their lead to claim this postcard first. The final postcard instructed all team members to walk through the middle of the reserve to the final location; namely the wind turbine (pictured above) near the 'Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre'. All four member of the Fantastic Four left for this 600 metre trek. Team Brunei arrived merely minutes later, only to be stopped with the news that the Blue team had won. Tony, Cindy, Kelly and Graham arrived at the wind turbine to claim the title of first place, narrowly beating Ari and Kerry. The final placing saw the Purple team maintain the middle position, with Green and Orange teams tied for last. So, as the light drizzle continued to fall and the competition officially concluded, the Blue team (pictured below) were formally crowned the winner of the 2005 Winter Chase! Congratulations Fantastic Four!!!
