...on the 2007 Spring Chase
('Chasers' in the 2007 Spring Chase: Codeword) On the 30th of September, 2007, the Codeword Chase began. The Chase required the combination of problem solving skills and the ability to crack codes. By the end of the day however, one team would pull out, one team would get totally lost, and the remain two teams would race both on foot and by car to the final location... yet only one would eventually win. The question being, would the birthday girl be in the winning team.
This special Chase was made for the Purple Team, Kerry (birthday girl) and Ari. The group of friends started at the Piney Lakes Learning Centre, just near the finishing line of the previous two events. Here all four teams received a braille codeword that needed to be decoded by finding 'The Ring of Rabbits'. An additional prize was offered to any team who wished to find a special, unspecified clue of which only one team could claim. The Green team secured the special clue, which was the braille code written out in full. For the rest, Red left first, with Purple not that for behind. Green caught up, leaving Blue in last place.
Teams then travelled to Bruce Lee Reserve, to count the number of bats on the Female toilet wall. This bonus didn't require the exact answer, but would accept an average answer from all teams. Both Green and Purple recieved the bonus points for this challenge, but purple was also able to sustain a lead; with Red and Green not far behind. A Clue sent teams to the Terracotta Tile Company, where a Bonus puzzle awaited them.
Red was first to find the puzzle in the oven, then Purple joined them. Both teams took the bonus, and made it on foot to the Queen Victoria Street round-a-bout. The first Split of the game sent passengers to find the Proclamation Tree, and then return to their team with the next clue. Ari, made it first to the tree, with Kevin and Reece metres behind. Dave from the Green team made it to the tree mintutes later, but where was the Blue team.
Confused from the Terracotta Tile clue, the team started heading south, to a beach location. In an attempt to allow them to catch up, the Blue team skipped the two tasks, and proceed straight to the Fremantle prison. As a result of the two incompletes, the team lost major Bonus points. At the prison, teams received a Bonus quiz; namely the seven list quiz. Teams had to answer ever question on the quiz (correctly or incorrectly) to receive the next clue. Purple maintained a lead, yet the green team came in second, but left in third. Blue was also unable to make it to this location, losing vital bonus points and ranking.
At the next location, two activities awaited all teams. Firstly, teams need to locate a turnstyle at the edge of Raceway Park, and answer the simple Bonus question; in what year was the plaque dated. Upon returning with that answer, teams needed to complete a quiz that depicted flags of the world. The list of flags was in alphabetic order, but as long as each square had an answer team would receive their next clue. Here, purple maintained their lead of the game, with all teams (including Blue) not that far behind.
At Heathcote Reserve, teams had to locate a vertical boat in the playground. Another bonus puzzle awaited teams, which allowed most of the teams to catch up. Although Purple secured the bonus, Green was able to shave their lead away. At on of the most difficult locations to find, teams were sent to the Bibra Lake - Chipping and Putting range (a small stretch of grass, opposite Adventure World). At this location, teams needed to find their original codeword hidden in one of three old kettles. The arrival order of Green, Red, Purple and Blue, only slightly changed when Red completed the challenge and left in first.
At the Willieri Underpass in Willetton, another two activities awaited teams. Firstly teams had to count to number of hands on Chloe's mural, then (working with the other teams) decode a Bonus question using their braille codeword. Red was the first team to the mural, however a misunderstanding with the Bonus lead them to believe they needed to return to Piney Lakes. Purple came in second, and struggled trying to decode the Bonus by themselves. The Green team arrived, and thanks to their braille answer sheet from the beginning of the day left in first position. Giving a helping hand to the Purple team, both the Green and Purple team attained the Bonus, with Blue taking third, and Red still lost.
A True or False clue lead team (if correct) to the Morning Cloud Park. Here, a rope puzzle awaites them, with their teams codeword attached. Purple were first to the location and to remove their rope, with green second and red, taking up third. The Red teem, however, untied the wrong codeword, allowing a trailing Blue team third position. Then at the end of fifth avenue in Rossmoyne, teams were instructed to choose a telescope task, or a True or False task.
With only a picture for guidance, the telescope team needed to find the lunchtime spot on the Swan River coast. The True or False teams need to answer the question to continue team east to the same location, the Shelly Sailing Club. The purple team maintained their dominance in the game, recording their eight first place. Green came in second, Red third and Blue recorded their final last place.
After lunch, only three began the second leg. The remaining teams traveled to the otherside of the river, namely to the spit oppisite the Fifth Avenue intersection. Red came in first to this location, with Purple and Green not that far behind. Teams then recieved a clue sending them to Lake Gillon, where a Bonus activity awaited them. Teams were asked to jump through the giant rings in the park to get their next clue. This time the order changed slightly, with Red in first, Purple in second and Green slipping way back in the race.
At the Como Beach jetty, a special Bonus clue was available to the first team with the correct answer. Not only did the task offer valuable Bonus points, but it also enabled one team a look at the find question that would eventually open the final challenge; a briefcase. Ari claimed the bonus by correctly decoding the braille answer to "Swan River Ferries". There clue was "What was the nationality of the man who invented Braille?" After leaving this location, Red came in second with Green so lost that they needed to skip the stop all together.
With the Blue team pulling out, and the Green team completely lost, only two teams remained. At the next location, Sir James Mitchell Park, teams were required to find the telescope and locate a name hidden somewhere on a window in South Perth. The name of Louise Braille (and for the Purple team, the answer to part of the clue "...who invented Braille"...) was visible in a six story building. Purple was the fist to identify it, then Red came in second.
With only the two teams left, the last number of stops remained close together all the way to the end. Teams went to the Old Mill, and were asked to complete a bonus which required the 4-digit number of the jetty at Mill Point take-off area. Staying neck-and-neck both teams returned with the correct answer, and directions to Hawthorne Park. Although the Red team made it there first, the lead was very short.
At Hawthorne Park, the teams had to count the number of steps in the park, then locate the numerical answer in Braille. From here, teams raced to the penaultimate location of G. O. Edwards Park in Burswood. Both teams, arriving together, made their way to the final task; a brief case and two code clues. A Word in Braille spelling out "French" or a number of questions about locations seen on the day, that spell out the numbers that open the lock. Realising that the answer was French spelt out on a mobile key pad, the purple team opened the case first. The last clue provided an option for team to traval to the final location; either by foot or car. The red team chose to divide their team, half car and half walking, but because the rules need all team members to cross at the same time, the walking Purple team claimed victory.
Congratulations Purple!!!!
