Week Three: Improvisations with Scripts

Wednesday, 4 March 2009

Just a few reminders for Children's Theatre:

1. I need to know who is going on prac, and when.
2. I also need to know who will be away during the Week 5 Study Break.

Some people have already emailed me this information, thank you, but I need everyone else to do so as well, even if you've told me (or one of the other tutors) in person. Cheers.

3. Jenny needs to know who is also involved in Acting & Production I this semester. She'd like to, if at all possible, have a meeting with those people who are doing the two units at the end of next week's workshop. So, could those concerned please email me back a) stating that they are in Ad Pro I (& in what capacity) & b) if they can meet with Jenny at 12.30pm next week.

4. Finally, if there is anyone who has any commitments outside of uni that they feel may impact on the scheduled rehearsals and/or performances, please let us know as soon as possible.

None of this is to preclude anyone from any aspect of the production, just because you're going on prac in week 5 doesn't mean you won't be allowed to act, or just because you're involved with a show outside of the university it doesn't mean you won't be allowed to be involved in this one. It's just that with so many of you, forewarned is fore-armed :)

I'm done . . . I think.

This time, it's all about CT.

Ok, so next week we have our first production meeting planned as well as auditions.

Those of you who nominated a production role as your first preference must attend at 8.30 (unless you've already notified us of your unavailability). We're also asking that anyone who nominated acting as their first preference and a production role as their second (ie PR or costumes etc) to also attend. I'm attaching a list of everyone who falls into either of these two categories. If your name is not on the list and you would like to be involved in some way, please email me and let me know and feel free to come along at 8.30am on Wednesday. Please note that I haven't included anyone who nominated set building as a preference, simply because you should all be in contact with Tim anyway.

On to the auditions (cue scary music) DON'T STRESS!!! I say this, knowing fully well that you all intend to do just that, I just felt it needed to be said. Jenny will have copies of the script (most of it at any rate) at 8.30am. If you would like to have a read before the workshop starts, please come along between 8.30 and 9.30 and do just that. As we will be having a production meeting during that time, we do ask that you are quiet about picking up the scripts and that you remove yourself to an elsewhere in order to peruse them :)

Finally (I think), there are a number of singers amongst you this year and Jenny is considering (only considering at this stage) including some songs into the show. She asking anyone that would like to sing in the show to prepare a song and bring along the backing cd. We'll have an informal singing audition after the acting on Wednesday between 12.30 and 1.00.

Done now.

One of the best pieces of advice that I love to offer (when it comes to writing journals) is a 10% description - 90% reflection ratio. Don't spend all the time explaining what happened... we know, we were there too. Write about why you believe it was important. Here are some ideas for starting your journals...

bullet

What did you like (or dislike) about today's activities?

bullet

How well do you think you went?

bullet

What did you learn about yourself, or the theatre?

bullet

What goals would you set for yourself to achieve by the end of the semester?

bullet

Why did your group's improvisation work (or not work)?

bullet

How would you improve your performance next time?
